Titikaveka Beach
Titikaveka is a slice of paradise that stands out as one of Rarotonga's best beaches, with an expansive white sand stretch and crystal-clear waters that practically beg you to soak in the peaceful vibes. Taking long strolls in either direction along the pristine and serene shores were among my favorite memories of Rarotonga.
Titikaveka's lagoon is a mesmerizing turquoise hue, offering a peek into the even more vibrant underwater world. Having explored Rarotonga for over a week, I can confidently say that Titikaveka was one of my favorite beaches on Rarotonga, thanks to its idyllic ambiance and beautiful underwater life.

Black Rock Beach
Nestled in the northwest corner of Rarotonga, just past the airport, Black Rock Beach is one of the best sunset-watching spots on the island. This beach is not just a picturesque haven but also steeped in cultural significance. According to the Cook Islands Maori traditional lore, the monolithic black rock at the beach's western end is a sacred marker, guiding departing souls beyond Rarotonga's shores.
Despite its fame, Black Rock remains a haven of serenity. With ample parking and a sprawling shoreline that stretches for over a mile, don’t expect crowds. The gentle waves and heavenly turquoise water make it an ideal spot for a refreshing swim. A few food trucks park here, making Black Rock a wonderful place to enjoy lunch and a leisurely beach day. While you'll find some shade near the parking lot, keep in mind that the beach basks in direct sun all day, so don’t forget sun protection.
Muri Beach
Muri Beach is the crown jewel of Rarotonga and is undoubtedly the island's most celebrated stretch of coastline. Picture a subtle crescent-shaped white sand beach cradling a shallow sand-bottomed lagoon barely 5 feet deep at high tide. Across this turquoise expanse are small islets (motus), easily accessible by a leisurely swim or kayak.
Muri Beach stands as a hub of tourist activity in Rarotonga. The beach is lined with hotels and dining spots that add to its lively charm. Surprisingly, however, the beach was refreshingly uncrowded, even in the peak of high season during my August visit. Over a mile of soft, powdery sands are perfect for a long beach walk. The shallow, crystal-clear waters create an idyllic setting for unwinding and soaking in the island's beauty.
Venture beyond the shoreline, and you'll discover the beautiful motus waiting to be explored. The Motus across from Muri are uninhabited and accessible to the public. These islets offer a tranquil escape, whether swimming, kayaking, or paddleboarding. Please remember to pack your reef shoes if you decide to wade over because of the risk of Stonefish stings. The most easily accessible islet from Muri Beach is Motu Koromiri (included at the end of this list).
For thrill-seekers, Muri Beach is the hotspot for kitesurfers and wing foilers, thanks to the consistent winds during the windsurfing season from May to October. Muri Beach has a little something for everyone, whether you're seeking serenity or craving an adrenaline rush.
Tikioki Marine Reserve & Beach
Step into the aquatic wonderland of Tikioki Marine Reserve, fondly dubbed the "Fruits of Rarotonga" and renowned as the best snorkeling spot on the island. Nestled just south of Muri Beach, this hidden gem invites you to dive into its crystal-clear waters, where the vibrant reef teems with abundant marine life. Lagoon tours often guide snorkelers through this submerged paradise, but you can easily explore the shallow lagoon from the shore.
Tikioki boasts exceptional snorkeling and has a tranquil white sand shoreline, providing the perfect backdrop for unwinding in relative seclusion. Facing south, the beach enjoys morning shade, thanks to the elegant palms that gracefully arch over the sands, creating a comfortable atmosphere and a photogenic haven. If you’re looking for a great beach walk, head west from the parking area and walk along the shore until you hit Charlie’s Beach Bar for lunch (one of my favorites!).
For the best snorkeling in Rarotonga, Tikioki Marine Reserve is your best bet for beautiful underwater exploration and a serene beach retreat all rolled into one.
Aroa Beach
Tucked away in the tranquil southwest corner of Rarotonga, Aroa Beach is a tropical haven, a serene escape for those pursuing peace. With some of the island's most breathtaking sunset views, this picturesque beach paints a canvas of serenity. Soft white sands invite you to unwind, and morning shade along the shoreline is a welcome respite from the tropical rays.
Aroa Beach is also a protected marine reserve. The beautiful turquoise waters here beckon, encouraging you to explore the hidden beauty beneath! Dive in, and you'll find some of the best snorkeling in Rarotonga. The calm waters, vibrant reefs, and ample sea life beneath the surface will not disappoint you.
Nikao Beach
Nikao Beach, a mere 5-minute drive from Rarotonga International Airport, is a laid-back oasis. I wouldn’t have found this quiet beach without a serendipitous lunch at Vaiana's, an excellent casual beachfront spot we highly recommend.
Picture this: a crescent-shaped bay with a peaceful absence of waves, revealing a broad stretch of pristine white sand. The water? A mesmerizing turquoise blue. After lunch on a weekday, we had the entire beach to ourselves. The beach also offers a lovely evening vibe and attracts local families on the weekends, given its proximity to Avarua town.
Whether grabbing a bite at Vaiana's or strolling along the lagoon, this spot offers a laid-back escape. Nikao Beach is a wonderfully unpretentious slice of Rarotonga's beauty.
Motu Koromiri
Motu Koromiri, the serene motu situated directly across the Muri Beach lagoon, beckons with tranquility. Reachable by kayak, paddleboard, or a refreshing swim (keep an eye on those currents), Motu Koromiri provides a peaceful escape.

When the tide is high, the lagoon reaches a depth of about 5 feet, becoming shallower as the tide recedes—making it possible to wade across in reef shoes. While Motu Koromiri is a regular stop on lagoon hopping tours, the true enchantment of this motu reveals itself once the tours leave in the afternoon. Picture this: panoramic views of Rarotonga's main island, painted in the hues of a setting sun—a breathtaking (and unmissable!) spectacle.
