For the second half of my two weeks on Aitutaki, I wanted a dreamlike escape that felt distinct from the first half of my stay on the island's Western side. When looking for accommodation in Aitutaki, I envisioned a small beachfront property with comfortable and modern rooms, a strong sense of privacy, and an excellent value.
I stumbled upon Tai Roto Bay Beach Villas through TripAdvisor and was immediately drawn by the captivating beauty of Ootu Beach. I immediately knew I’d found the best value hotel in Aitutaki.
Nestled on the serene northern end of Aitutaki, this family-owned Aitutaki hotel with just six rooms promises an intimate bed-and-breakfast style experience that exudes comfort, and a touch of luxury. From the moment I saw it, I had a strong hunch that Tai Roto Bay would be the answer to my dilemma of where to stay in Aitutaki. Arrival and First Impressions
Our journey to Tai Roto Bay Beach Villas started with a warm welcome from Cheran, who graciously picked us up from our previous accommodation on the West side of Aitutaki. Her heartfelt greeting and understanding of our situation (visiting from Maui just after the wildfires) touched our hearts.
Cheran truly went the extra mile, assisting us in securing dinner reservations at nearby restaurants, considering we didn't have a vehicle for this part of our trip. She also recommended a fantastic lagoon tour company and helped arrange our booking for that as well.
Upon arriving at the property, I was immediately captivated by the lush tropical gardens, meticulously landscaped and sprawling gracefully around the villas and out towards the glistening, turquoise lagoon.
As we explored the property, we discovered the thoughtful extras that enhance your stay. Tai Roto Bay Beach Villas provides guests with complimentary bicycles, allowing you to explore the surroundings and soak in the island's natural beauty. Scooters can be rented from the front office, providing a seamless way to navigate the island's hidden gems.
Two endearing and sociable cats called Tai Roto Bay home and welcomed us promptly. They're always up for a bit of attention, adding a charming touch to the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the property!
Accommodation & Amenities
We opted for the Lagoon & Garden View Villa (#4), offering a delightful peekaboo view of the lagoon through lush tropical plants, just a stone's throw from the tranquil water's edge. The room features a spacious porch with a bistro table, chairs, and a lounger – a perfect place for relaxing, having lunch, or devouring a good book.
Stepping inside the villa, you’re immersed myself in a modern, colorful island design. The ceiling and cabinets boast intricately woven paneling, and vibrant tropical textiles adorn the king-sized bed. Every corner of the villa exudes the essence of the Cook Islands, and the accommodation has a lovely sense of place.
Our villa had a fully equipped and newly renovated kitchen containing all the essentials – a range top, oven, refrigerator, kettle, filtered water dispenser, and toaster. The villa also featured a loveseat and dining table, creating an inviting, comfortable suite-like atmosphere. The bathroom, adorned in a stylish black and white motif, boasted a rain shower.
Hospitality and Staff
The family-owned atmosphere was one of the most delightful aspects of our stay at Tai Roto Bay. Cheran and her daughter were exceptionally friendly and wonderful to converse with. Cheran and her daughter's insider knowledge and recommendations for local restaurants and lagoon tours were invaluable, introducing us to the best Aitutaki had to offer. Tai Roto Bay is the perfect place for visitors who love connecting with their hosts and experiencing the best authentic hospitality Aitutaki offers.
The Beach and Surroundings
Nestled at the serene and secluded end of Ootu Beach, Tai Roto Bay Beach Villas holds an enviable position on one of Aitutaki's most exquisite stretches of coastline. From the moment you check in at this Aitutaki hotel, you'll find yourself on a pristine, picture-perfect beach that epitomizes paradise.
Ootu Beach curves around the corner toward Blue Lagoon Restaurant. This far corner acts as public access and a starting point for many of the island's lagoon tours. However, on the Tai Roto Bay side, a secluded emerald and turquoise bay with a white sandy bottom awaits. No other accommodations along this side of the beach give it a very private and exclusive feeling.
The azure waters here may lack coral reefs, but the beach offers something special – a deep natural swimming hole right in front of the villas. It's the perfect place to immerse yourself in the crystal-clear waters!
Tai Roto Bay Beach Villas provides an array of water equipment for complimentary use. You can glide along the waveless lagoon on kayaks or a stand-up paddleboard. You also can borrow snorkeling equipment to use at your leisure. Ootu Beach is the absolute definition of peace. You might even find yourself the only one on the beach!
Dining and Food
Tai Roto Bay Beach Villas follows a self-catering approach, though they provide complimentary daily breakfast. The continental-style breakfast includes toast and jams, fresh tropical fruits, yogurt, cereal, fruit juice, and coffee/tea – perfect for a light and healthy start to the day.
Each villa has a fully equipped kitchen, allowing guests to shop for groceries and prepare meals. The nearest grocery stores are ten to fifteen minutes away in Amuri.
Tai Roto Bay is also within walking or biking distance of several excellent local restaurants. Our favorite was Koru Café, offering a fresh and healthy menu and a perfect outdoor setting under the palms. Don't miss the lively karaoke on Friday nights at the renowned Boatshed restaurant. Blue Lagoon, with its idyllic beachfront location, is just steps away, and the upscale restaurant at Aitutaki Lagoon Private Island Resort offers a romantic dining option for special occasions.
Thoughts & Recommendations
Tai Roto Bay Beach Villas captured my heart with its flawless and secluded location along Ootu Beach. This Aitutaki hotel offers a serene, peaceful haven nestled beside one of the best beaches on the main island.
With only a handful of other guests at any given time, you might even find moments of complete solitude, allowing you to bask in the beauty of this remarkable island. Beyond the natural allure, the warm and personalized service truly made my husband and I feel like part of the family from the moment we arrived.
I wholeheartedly recommend Tai Roto Bay Beach Villas to travelers seeking relaxation and immersion in the natural beauty of one of the world's best islands. If you value simplicity, modern amenities, and a stunning beach, Tai Roto Bay offers excellent value compared with other accommodations on Aitutaki!
Tips for Future Guests
All the villas are near the lagoon. Even the garden-view bungalows are mere steps away (no more than 150ft) from the beach. Only one villa is directly beachfront facing the lagoon, offering magnificent views but slightly less privacy. The other villas have lush tropical greenery in front of their porches and varying partial views of the lagoon.
Check the flight departure schedule during your stay! It's a fun experience to watch planes taking off from the airstrip just behind the property. There are only a few flights a day (all during daylight hours), so it isn’t noisy.
Remember that the property serves only breakfast, but several excellent restaurants are within walking distance, with more just a short drive or bike ride away.
I recommend renting a car while staying at Tai Roto Bay to fully explore the beauty Aitutaki has to offer. Reserve your rental in advance! I suggest Rino's rentals, as they conveniently deliver your car to your hotel and pick it up at the end of your rental.
Don't forget to pack reef shoes! Aitutaki is home to venomous stonefish, and wearing reef shoes ensures you won't be stung.
